Welcome to the Westie Health eBook.  The purpose of the eBook is to provide Westie owners and veterinarians more detailed information about various health concerns affecting Westies.  We are providing this information in an electronic format on our website so that we can add more content covering additional health concerns, as well as updating health concerns listed earlier with more current information.

We started off in 2006 with information on four specific Westie health concerns: Atopic Dermatitis (Atopy); Bladder Cancer (Transitional Cell Carcinoma); Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis; and, Legg-CalvĂ©-Perthes Disease.  In 2007, we added four new topics: CMO (Craniomandibular Osteopathy), Luxating Patella, Addison’s disease, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).  In 2008, we added Juvenile Cataracts, White Shaker Syndrome, Breeding and Whelping and Aggression.  In 2009, we added Diabetes Mellitus, Dry Eye (KeratoConjunctivitis Sicca), Copper Toxicity, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  Each year, we expect to add information on approximately four more Westie health concerns.

Most of the information provided should be understandable to the average Westie owner.  At the end of each section, more detailed scientific information and references are provided for veterinarians and others seeking more technical and in-depth information.

The Westie Health eBook is a project funded by the Westie Foundation and produced by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM).  We welcome any comments or suggestions on how we can improve the quality and/or usefulness of the information provided in the eBook by simply using the Contact Us link.

We sincerely hope that you will find the information in our Westie Health eBook useful, helpful and informative.
