Topical Lotion for Canine Atopy

Spring 2002

Grant No. D01CA-95 Morris Animal Health Foundation
Title: Investigation on the use of 0.3% tacrolimus lotion
for canine atopy
Principal Investigator: Rosanna Marsella, DVM
Research Institution: University of Florida

This is the first progress report from our principal investigators at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. The aims of this study are:

  1. The efficacy of topical daily application of tacrolimus in decreasing clinical signs of atopic dermatitis in dogs over a four-week period.

  2. The systemic absorption of tacrolimus in dogs with atopic dermatitis after repetitive daily topical application.

  3. The effect of daily application of tacrolimus on complete blood cell counts and chemistry panels in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

Progress: Our principal investigator indicates that they need twelve dogs with atopic dermatitis. Recruitment of dogs was begun in the fall of 2001 and to date ten dogs meeting study criteria have been enrolled; an additional ten dogs are in "progress." This means the researchers are in the progress of clearing the secondary skin bacterial infections that sometimes occur with atopy and that they are determining the underlying cause of the dogs’ atopy. To date, thirty-seven cases have been determined ineligible due to other factors; an additional thirteen cases are pending.

What is 0.3% tacrolimus lotion? Tacrollimus lotion is a human product that has been used with success. It is a cyclosporium.
