SPECIAL REQUEST FOR CONGENITAL CATARACTS RESEARCH PROJECT
One of our funded research projects is to identify the genetic marker
for Congenital Cataracts in Westies. In order for the researchers to
do their work, they need DNA samples from two or more littermates who
have been diagnosed with this disease. WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP!!!
Participation is free and completely confidential. Details below:
We are conducting research on Congenital Cataracts in West Highland
White Terriers with the intent of discovering the gene(s) that cause
Congenital Cataracts and developing a DNA test which will show the
status of the dog regarding his/her ability to pass this disease on
to offspring.
For this project we are looking for families of Westies where two or
more littermates have been diagnosed with Congenital Cataracts and
are available for DNA sample collection. Along with the two affected dogs
we need DNA samples from their parents, both whenever possible, and
any unaffected littermates to the two (or more) affected dogs. We need
copies of their pedigrees to see how they are related to one another,
and if they are part of an already existing family here. This helps
us learn the mode of inheritance of the disease.
For our purposes, DNA samples are collected by means of small cheek
brushes which are simply swiped in the dog's mouth. We send out the
number of swabs required and include a self-addressed, stamped
envelope for their return.
Participation in our research is free and completely confidential.
